Stringent Criteria for Stable and Unstable Planetary Orbits in Stellar Binary Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
The existence of planets in stellar binary (and higher order) systems has now been confirmed by many observations. The stability of planetary orbits in these systems has been extensively studied, but no precise stability criteria have so far been introduced. Therefore, there is an urgent need for developing stringent mathematical criteria that allow us to precisely determine whether a planetary orbit in a binary system is stable or unstable. In this Letter, such criteria are defined using the concept of Jacobi’s integral and Jacobi’s constant. These criteria are used to contest previous results on planetary orbital stability in binary systems. Subject headings: astrobiology — binaries: general — celestial mechanics — planetary systems

Symplectic Integrator Algorithms for Modeling Planetary Accretion in Binary Star Systems
We derive and test two new symplectic integrator algorithms, suitable for studying planetary accretion in binary star systems. The algorithms incorporate the hierarchical nature of stable planetary orbits in binary star systems. In one case, planets orbit a single star, perturbed by a distant companion; in the second case, planets orbit both binary members. Each algorithm integrates close encou...

In order to distinguish between regular and chaotic planetary orbits we apply a new technique called MEGNO in a wide neighbourhood of orbital parameters determined using standard two-body Keplerian fits for HD12661, HD38529, HD37124, HD160691 planetary systems. We show that the currently announced orbital parameters place these systems in very different situations from the point of view of dyna...
متن کاملStable 1:2 Resonant Periodic Orbits in Elliptic Three-Body Systems
The results of an extensive numerical study of the periodic orbits of planar, elliptic restricted three-body planetary systems consisting of a star, an inner massive planet and an outer mass-less body in the external 1:2 mean-motion resonance are presented. Using the method of differential continuation, the locations of the resonant periodic orbits of such systems are identified and through an ...
متن کاملPlanet-planet Scattering in Planetesimal Disks
We study the final architecture of planetary systems that evolve under the combined effects of planet-planet and planetesimal scattering. Using N-body simulations we investigate the dynamics of marginally unstable systems of gas and ice giants both in isolation and when the planets form interior to a planetesimal belt. The unstable isolated systems evolve under planet-planet scattering to yield...
متن کاملSecular Evolution of Planetary Systems in Binaries
The orbital eccentricity of a single planet in a stellar binary system with a sufficiently large mutual inclination angle is known to oscillate on a secular timescale through the Kozai mechanism. We have investigated the effects of the Kozai mechanism on double-planet systems in binaries. The evolutionary sequence of a pair of planets under the influence of a binary companion is fairly complex....
